Make Your Mark on Cancer Update

Thank you for making your mark

On Sunday July 16th, over 500 people participated in the fifth annual 22km ‘Make Your Mark on Cancer’ charity walk from The Viaduct to Bandon.

Thank you

Thanks to sponsors C103FM and their fabulous street fleet who added even more colour and excitement to the day. The walk would not have been possible without the support of the following: Ace Signs, McCarthy Coaches, The Viaduct, Trevor Collins, Caulfield’s SuperValu, O’Sullivan’s of Innishannon, Dessi Electrical, Lidl (Bandon), MPOS Cash and Carry, ABP Bandon and Des Prendergast and his team in the Bandon Town Hall. A HUGE Shout out to Thomas O’Donovan (Milkman) who delivers the Water chilled and supplies sponsorship of dairy products.

A big thank you to Rob Heffernan for supporting the Make Your Mark on Cancer Walk this year. Please visit www.makeyourmark.ie for futher information.

What is Make Your Mark on Cancer?

Make Your Mark on Cancer is a sponsored walk held in memory of Mark Prendergast who sadly lost his battle with Testicular Cancer in June 2012. “Mark enjoyed his life, and although taken too young by Cancer he has instilled in family and friends a zest for life and an urge to help other cancer patients and their families. We honour the taken, we admire the survivors, and we support those currently fighting. His motto ‘Look up, not down; look out, not in; look forward, not back’ lives on.” Fiona Prendergast, Mark’s wife.

If you walked, here’s where your money is going:

Funds raised will go towards the cost of developing the Mercy Hospital Foundation’s new Mercy Cancer CARE Centre. This Centre will provide a space and a place close to Mercy University Hospital for people diagnosed with cancer, to support them along their cancer journey. This Centre will offer Mercy patients as well as their families the practical, emotional and social support that people with cancer need.

Damien Prendergast, Mark’s brother and Chairman of the organising committee said “Our aim this year is to reach the €250,000 milestone. This would be a fantastic achievement for the group in a very short time, and make this dream a reality for ‘Make your Mark on Cancer’. Through our fundraising efforts we are aiming to support and help people who are diagnosed with cancer and their families by offering them a place to go for information, help, and support.  At the darkest moments we need to show there is light at the end of the tunnel, or at the very least they will be supported and assisted on their journey.”
