Help us raise €25,000 for an Ultrasound machine for critically-ill patients at The Mercy Hospital ICU. Read the late Pat Murphy’s story below to see how your donation can make a difference.
‘Pat’s fought this for three weeks…he’s a fighter’
When Eileen Murphy’s husband, Pat, was rushed to the Mercy’s Intensive Care Unit in May 2016, she knew something was terribly wrong. With his vital organs shutting down, Pat needed urgent critical care, and was immediately placed on dialysis and ventilator support.
The ICU team said that Pat was the ‘sickest person they had ever seen’, but Eileen knew he was ‘a fighter’. Pat continued to fight courageously over the course of the next three weeks. Pat was placed in an isolation room, while the team cared for him around the clock. They tended to his every need, both medical and personal. They shaved Pat and washed his hair, ensured that the radio was tuned to his favourite sports programmes, and regularly played Big Tom and Seán Keane CD’s – the music Pat loved to listen to.
Speaking of the quality of care he received at the Mercy, Pat’s wife, Eileen, said: ‘They were fantastic to Pat, and they were fantastic to us. The care Pat received was excellent, it was second to none. From the doctors, nurses, physios, care assistants and porters, everyone would ask how we were doing and always had a kind word’.
Over the next few weeks, Pat was on and off a ventilator, only able to communicate intermittently.
• Imagine only being able to communicate by squeezing a hand, or giving a nod
• Imagine not being able to talk to your loved ones
• Imagine your busy life, coming to a complete standstill
The Intensive Care team at the Mercy, care for the most critically-ill patients using life-supporting and life-saving equipment. An Ultrasound machine helps administer essential fluids and nutrients, specialised medication, and assists in major surgeries including neurological procedures and cancer surgeries.
However, there is currently only one Ultrasound machine, shared between five surgical theatres at the Mercy. The ICU is in vital need of a new Ultrasound machine, which they urgently need to allow faster delivery of treatment and further enhance patient safety and comfort. At a cost of €25,000, we really need your help. Can you help us deliver this treatment to critically-ill patients?
You can join the ICU team here at the Mercy, by donating just €50 towards the cost of this essential life-saving equipment.
• With your help, doctors and nurses can carry out life-saving procedures even faster
• With your help, patients can receive essential medication in a comfortable environment
• With your help, the Intensive Care Unit will receive a vital piece of equipment to aid patient recovery
Pat fought hard, but after 3 weeks, Pat lost the fight, passing away surrounded by his loving wife Eileen, and his close family and friends. Thank you for giving your time and reading Pat’s story.
